Efficient intellectual asset management are essential for both individuals and organisations to increase their capacity for collaboration, communication, and knowledge valorisation. Recommendation on a Code of practice on the management of intellectual asset for knowledge valorisation has recently been published by the European Commission (EC). With the new code of practice, it is intended to increase the impact of research results and innovative technologies and accelerate the use of knowledge. This code provides direction on managing strategic intellectual assets and is targeted to all research and innovation (R&I) actors.

In addition to the Code of Practice on the Management of Intellectual Assets, the Commission has also adopted a Recommendation on a Code of practice on Standardisation. Standards help researchers and innovators bring their innovation closer to the market and spread technological advances by establishing uniform criteria and by developing methods, practices and procedures which are publicly available in a formal document. The new code of practice on standardisation aims to help with the successful integration of R&I activities with standardisation.

Both initiatives will provide guidance for researchers and innovators on how to manage their intellectual assets as well as on how best to use the results for standardisation.

The Commission has also released two factsheets to make these publications widely spread to raise awareness on the Code of practice and to foster its uptake by the broadest possible range of R&I actors.
