Opposition is the administrative procedure by which the legitimate owner of earlier trade marks or earlier rights, can ask the Italian Patent and Trademark Office to refuse the registration of a national trade mark filed by a third party, deemed registrable (or, in specific cases annul the effects of international registration extended to Italy or of early national registration for the extension of trade mark protection abroad, pursuant to the Madrid Agreement for the international registration of trade marks).
